1. Our commitment

BionicMed Ltd is committed to ensuring that bionicmed.eu is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of technology, ability, or circumstance.

We believe accessibility is not an add-on — it is a fundamental quality requirement for any digital service. This is particularly important to us given BionicMed's focus on assistive technology and healthcare: the people our work ultimately serves often live with disabilities themselves.

We continuously work to improve the accessibility of this website in accordance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2.

2. Standard we aim for

We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA — the standard referenced in:

  • The UK Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (SI 2018/952).
  • The European Accessibility Act (EAA / Directive 2019/882), which is progressively coming into force.
  • The Equality Act 2010 (UK), which requires reasonable adjustments for disabled people.

WCAG 2.2 is organised around four principles: content must be Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust. Level AA encompasses all Level A criteria plus additional Level AA requirements.

3. Built-in accessibility features

This website includes an Accessibility Panel (the ⓘ button fixed to the right side of the screen) that allows you to customise your viewing experience without changing your browser or operating system settings:

Aa

Text size adjustment

Increase or decrease the base font size in steps of 2px, from −4px to +8px relative to default. Works independently of your browser's zoom.

Dy

Dyslexia-friendly font

Switches body text to OpenDyslexic, a typeface designed to aid readers with dyslexia by using heavier bottoms to indicate reading direction.

↔

Extended spacing

Increases letter spacing, word spacing, and line height throughout the page to aid readability for users with cognitive or visual processing differences.

◐

High contrast

Enforces maximum contrast between text and backgrounds (near-black on white, or near-white on dark), exceeding WCAG 2.2 enhanced contrast ratio of 7:1.

≋

Reduce animations

Disables all non-essential animations and transitions on the page. Equivalent to the OS-level "reduce motion" preference, applied specifically to this site.

☀/🌙

Dark / light mode

Toggle between light and dark colour schemes using the sun/moon icon in the navigation bar. Your preference is saved across visits.

All accessibility settings are saved in your browser's localStorage and persist across pages and visits until you clear them.

Additional built-in measures

  • Semantic HTML: Correct heading hierarchy (h1 → h2 → h3), landmark regions (nav, main, footer, aside), and list structures throughout.
  • Skip to content link: A visually hidden "Skip to main content" link appears on focus, allowing keyboard users to bypass the navigation.
  • ARIA labels: All interactive controls without visible text labels include aria-label or aria-labelledby attributes.
  • Focus visibility: All interactive elements have clearly visible keyboard focus indicators meeting WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 2.4.11 (Focus Appearance).
  • Colour contrast: Normal text meets a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 against its background; large text meets 3:1.
  • Responsive design: The layout adapts to viewport widths from 320px upward without horizontal scrolling.
  • No content that causes seizures: No flashing content above 3 Hz that could trigger photosensitive seizures.
  • SVG accessibility: All decorative SVGs are marked aria-hidden="true"; informative SVGs include appropriate ARIA attributes.
  • Form error handling: Form validation errors are announced via aria-live regions and associated with their fields using aria-describedby.
  • Language declaration: The primary language of each page is declared via lang="en" on the <html> element.

4. Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with WCAG 2.2 Level AA. We are working toward full compliance. The known non-conformances and limitations are detailed in section 5 below.

WCAG principle Level A Level AA
1. Perceivable ✔ Meets ✔ Meets
2. Operable ✔ Meets ✔ Meets
3. Understandable ✔ Meets ✔ Meets
4. Robust ✔ Meets ◑ Partially meets

This self-assessment was prepared in January 2025 during the initial site build. A formal third-party audit is planned for Q2 2025.

5. Known issues and limitations

We are aware of the following issues and are working to resolve them:

Issue WCAG criterion affected Impact Target resolution
Third-party fonts (Google Fonts) loaded from external CDN — may fail in high-privacy browser configurations, causing fallback typography 1.4.4 Resize text (AA) Low — fallback fonts remain readable Q2 2025 — self-hosted fonts
Dashboard visualisation (on BionicMove page) uses decorative SVG with no data table alternative 1.1.1 Non-text content (A) Medium — decorative mock-up, no real data conveyed Q2 2025 — add data table or aria-hidden
Contact form does not prevent submission while validation is pending (brief window) 3.3.1 Error identification (A) Low — errors are announced and inline Q1 2025 — fix in next release
No CAPTCHA alternative for contact form — None currently (no CAPTCHA in use) If CAPTCHA added, audio alternative will be included

If you encounter an accessibility barrier not listed above, please report it using the contact details in section 8.

6. Technical information

BionicMed Ltd relies on the following technologies for conformance with WCAG 2.2:

  • HTML5 — semantic markup and ARIA roles
  • CSS3 — responsive layout, focus indicators, reduced motion support via @media (prefers-reduced-motion)
  • JavaScript (ES6+) — interactive components with full keyboard and ARIA support

The site is designed to work with the following assistive technologies and browser combinations:

  • NVDA + Chrome (Windows)
  • JAWS + Edge (Windows)
  • VoiceOver + Safari (macOS / iOS)
  • TalkBack + Chrome (Android)
  • Keyboard-only navigation (all major browsers)

Technologies we do not rely on for accessibility: Flash, Java applets, PDFs (none in use), or browser plug-ins.

7. Testing approach

We use a combination of automated and manual testing:

  • Automated tools: axe DevTools, WAVE Evaluation Tool, and Lighthouse accessibility audits used during development.
  • Manual keyboard testing: Tab navigation, focus management, modal trapping, and skip links tested manually in Chrome and Firefox.
  • Screen reader testing: Pages tested with NVDA + Chrome and VoiceOver + Safari.
  • Colour contrast: All text/background combinations verified using the WebAIM Contrast Checker.
  • Zoom testing: Pages tested at 200% and 400% browser zoom.

A third-party accessibility audit against WCAG 2.2 Level AA is planned for Q2 2025. Results will be published and this statement updated accordingly.
